Dad gave our family a positive lifestyle change when we came to Steamboat via Rabbit Ears pass. It was back in the 70s when my family first came here to ski. A downshift caused the car to spin revealing a breathtaking drop which we hit backwards. I was lying down in the backseat of our Ford Granada, praying.
God and the only guard rail at the time between Steamboat and I70 saved us.
While telling the story to the friends I bring to The Boat (as I learned many locals call it) I'm still in love with this excellent place to enjoy mountain life.
My dad, however, coming from a Breckenridge mining family, considered himself a Breckenridge man. He went on to buy one home and built another in that area. I find Steamboat is fun and the views always beautiful and not as cold as my dad’s much loved Breckenridge. Today it is still my favorite place to ski, bike, hike or fish. The fishing spot on the Yampa River can be seen from the kitchen patio.
